History

Wolves were founded in 1877 as St. Luke's FC and initially played in local leagues. In 1889, the club joined the Football League and became known as Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club's early years were marked by success, as they won the FA Cup three times in the 1890s.

Wolves continued to be a top-flight club in the early 20th century, but their fortunes declined after the First World War. The club spent much of the interwar years in the Second Division and Third Division.

In the 1950s, Wolves experienced a revival under the management of Stan Cullis. The club won the League Championship three times in a row from 1954 to 1956 and also reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1958.

After Cullis left in 1960, Wolves struggled to maintain their success. The club was relegated to the Second Division in 1965 and did not return to the top flight until 1977.

Wolves spent much of the remaining 20th century in the top flight, but they were often inconsistent. The club was relegated to the Second Division again in 1984 and did not return to the Premier League until 2009.

Since returning to the Premier League, Wolves have established themselves as a mid-table club. The club has also competed in European competitions, reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2019.
